If the Major Arcana sets the big themes, the Minor Arcana fills in the everyday detail — and it makes up the bulk of the deck.
What the Minor Arcana is
The Minor Arcana is a set of 56 cards divided into four suits, much like a regular deck of playing cards. Where the Major Arcana points to life's big turning points, the Minor Arcana speaks to the day-to-day — the feelings, choices, and circumstances that make up your situation right now.
The four suits
Each suit has its own domain of life:
- Cups — emotions, relationships, love, and intuition. The heart's territory. (The Suit of Cups.)
- Wands — energy, passion, drive, and action. The spark that gets things moving. (The Suit of Wands.)
- Swords — thoughts, communication, conflict, and challenge. The realm of the mind. (The Suit of Swords.)
- Pentacles — money, work, home, and the material world. The practical, grounded suit. (The Suit of Pentacles.)
When a suit dominates a reading, it tells the reader which area of life is most in focus — a spread heavy in Cups is asking about the heart; one heavy in Pentacles, about practical or money matters.
Numbers and court cards
Within each suit, the cards run from Ace through Ten, plus four court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King). The numbers carry their own meaning — Aces are beginnings, Tens are completion — which we unpack in numerology in tarot. The court cards often represent people, or facets of you, within that suit's domain.
How it comes together
A reader rarely reads one Minor Arcana card alone. The meaning emerges from the suit, the number, the position in the spread, and the cards around it — all read against your question. That layering is the craft we walk through in how to read a tarot card.
Holding it honestly
The Minor Arcana is detailed and practical, but it still describes themes to reflect on, not a fixed outcome. Take what resonates and keep your own judgement in charge.
