Most readers are honest, but the vulnerable, hopeful moments people bring to a reading are exactly what a minority exploit. Knowing the warning signs protects you — so here's how to tell an exploitative reading from a genuine one.
The clearest red flags
If you notice any of these, treat the reading with real caution:
- Curse or bad-luck claims. Anyone who says your palm shows a curse, a hex, or doom hanging over you is not reading honestly. This is the setup for the oldest scam there is.
- Pay to "fix" it. The moment a "problem" in your hand comes with a fee to remove it, you're being exploited. No payment can lift a curse, because there's nothing real to lift.
- Guaranteed predictions. Honest palmistry can't foretell the future, as we explain in why a hand can't foretell what's coming. Anyone promising certainty is selling false prophecy.
- Fear and urgency. Pressure, alarm, and "you must act now" are manipulation tactics, not the tone of a thoughtful reading.
- Flattery that softens you up. Over-the-top praise designed to win your trust before the fear arrives is part of the same playbook.
- Health or money scares. No hand can reveal illness or guarantee wealth. Anyone claiming so — especially with a fee attached — is exploiting you, a line we hold firmly in what your hands can and can't reveal.
The single test that cuts through it
When in doubt, ask yourself one thing: does this reading leave my choices with me, or is it trying to take them? A genuine reading hands you something to reflect on and steps back. A scam manufactures a crisis only the reader can solve, usually for money. Honest reflection empowers you; a scam makes you dependent. That difference is almost always visible if you look for it.
What to do if you spot one
Trust your gut and disengage. Don't pay, don't hand over more information, and don't let urgency rush you — urgency is the tactic, not the truth. You owe an exploitative reader nothing, including politeness if they won't take a no. There's no curse to fear and nothing to fix.
The flip side of all this is knowing what good looks like, which we cover in how to find a reader you can trust.
