The twelve signs of the Vedic zodiac — the rashis — are one of the building blocks of a chart. Here's a clear map of what each one is and how they're read.
How the signs work
Each rashi belongs to the sidereal zodiac, mapped to the real positions of the stars, and each is ruled by a planet that lends it its character. The signs are also grouped by element — fire, earth, air, and water — and by quality, which a reader weighs together. Crucially, Vedic astrology doesn't read just one sign: it leans most on your Moon sign and your ascendant (lagna), alongside the signs your other planets occupy. There's more on how it all fits together in how a reading is actually done.

- Mithuna — the sign of the twins, curious and communicative, ruled by Mercury.
- Karka — the sign of the crab, nurturing and intuitive, ruled by the Moon.
- Simha — the sign of the lion, warm and confident, ruled by the Sun.
- Kanya — the sign of the maiden, precise and helpful, ruled by Mercury.
- Tula — the sign of the scales, fair and harmonious, ruled by Venus.
- Vrishchika — the sign of the scorpion, intense and deep, ruled by Mars.
- Dhanu — the sign of the archer, optimistic and free, ruled by Jupiter.
- Makara — the sign of the crocodile, disciplined and ambitious, ruled by Saturn.

Why your sign may surprise you
If your Vedic sign doesn't match the star sign you grew up with, that's expected. The two zodiacs have drifted apart over the centuries, so your Vedic placements are often a sign earlier than the Western ones — something we explain in how it differs from Western astrology. Neither is wrong; they simply measure from different starting points.
How to hold the signs
As with everything in a chart, the signs describe tendencies to reflect on, never a fixed fate. A sign is a flavour, not a label or a destiny, and it's always read alongside the houses, planets, and the rest of the chart — never alone. We keep that boundary clear in what a chart can and can't reveal.
How Kalm does it
At Kalm, a gifted reader reads your signs in the context of your whole chart and the question on your mind, then writes you a thoughtful, personal interpretation — saved to your dashboard usually within the hour, for you to keep and revisit.
