A birth chart isn't just a list of planets in signs — it's a web of relationships between them. Those relationships are called aspects, and they're what bring a chart to life.
What aspects are
Aspects are the angles between planets in your chart. They describe how different parts of you talk to each other — where energies cooperate, and where they clash. Two charts with the same placements but different aspects can read very differently, which is part of why interpretation is a craft, as we explain in how astrology readings work.
The main aspects
- Conjunction (0°) — planets sitting together, blending their energies intensely.
- Trine (120°) — a flowing, supportive aspect; these energies work together with ease.
- Sextile (60°) — a gentle, opportunity-rich harmony.
- Square (90°) — a tense aspect that creates friction, drive, and growth.
- Opposition (180°) — a tug-of-war between two energies seeking balance.
"Challenging" doesn't mean "bad"
This matters: the tense aspects — squares and oppositions — aren't flaws. They're often where your motivation, resilience, and growth come from. The friction of a square can be exactly what pushes you to develop. A thoughtful reading reframes hard aspects as areas to work with, not problems to fear.
Why aspects make a chart personal
Aspects connect the planets across the houses into a single, dynamic story. They're a big part of why a real reading feels so specific — and why two people who share a star sign can be so different. Pulling them together is the skill we cover in reading the whole chart.
Keeping it honest
Aspects are a language for reflection and self-understanding, describing tendencies and inner dynamics — never fixed verdicts, and never a substitute for professional advice. To see the aspects in your own chart, you can get a personal astrology reading on Kalm.
